Red Headed Cardinal Beetle

What a beautiful and dramatic looking beetle! His whole body is red.

The Red Headed Cardinal Beetle – the Pyrochroa serraticornis – is quite a common British beetle, unlike the Black Headed Cardinal Beetle (Pyrochroa coccinea), which looks almost the same, except for the head colour.  Can be spotted from May to July.  Measures ………………………… ???  If YOU know, please let me know so I can include it in this post – thanks! 🙂

Must not be confused with the equally attractive Scarlet Lily Beetle (Lilioceris lilii), a foreigner – who feeds on lillies, hence the name – who came to our UK shores around 60 years ago.
